After AMG and S, Daimler's premium brand has dreamed up another suffix for its hottest cars.
It all began with the Affalterbach company named AMG, which eventually became a fully fledged division of the Daimler corporation. Today, its products are called Mercedes-AMG instead of Mercedes-Benz, so a new suffix was needed to show the versions that have something extra for those customers that wanted even more. The letter S was chosen, which gave Mercedes-AMG models additional traits and power.
According to someone in the marketing department, S is no longer enough to show that a version of an enhanced Mercedes-Benz is faster than the normal range, so a new letter was needed. That letter is R, and the company already has a product available, the Mercedes-AMG GT R, and another one in the final stage of development, in the form of the C63 R Coupe.
In the case of the C63 R Coupe, Mercedes-AMG has reportedly fitted this version with a dry sump system, a “massaged” 4.0-liter V8 engine, and have cut a few pounds off the scales. The prototype that was being tested at the Nurburgring also came with a carbon fiber rear wing, along with a few other aerodynamic tweaks.
To the best of our knowledge, the Mercedes-AMG C63 R Coupe is set to be launched as a 2018 car, so we should expect to see it by mid-2017. Meanwhile, the freshly released E-Class Coupe will have an AMG version on the market by the end of next year. The resulting model will have to be sold for another year or so until Mercedes-AMG releases an R version.
Mercedes-AMG’s E63 R Coupe might be available on the market at the same time as BMW’s rumored M6 CS, which is expected to be a version of the performance model from Munich. The two cars should overlap each other on the market for a few years, which will lead to interesting comparisons for the fans of fast German cars.
