Mercedes-AMG has published the photo gallery and specifications of the new E43 4Matic.
This is the first performance version of the new E-Class, and is expected to be followed by an E63 variant. Mercedes-AMG’s E43 comes with the 4Matic four-wheel-drive as standard, and the system has a configuration biased toward the rear, sending 69% of power to the rear wheels.
The E43 comes with a 3.0-liter bi-turbo V6 engine that develops 401 PS and 520 Nm (384 lb-Ft). Peak torque comes in at a mere 2,500 rpm and is maintained up to 5,000 rpm, while the mentioned power level is reached at 6,100 rpm.
The kerb weight of this car is 1,765 kilograms (3,891 lbs) according to the DIN standard, with the fuel tank 90% full and no driver or luggage on board.
Mercedes-AMG estimates an average fuel consumption of 8.3 liters for every 100 kilometers done in the NEDC’s mixed cycle, with CO2 emissions of 189 grams/kilometer.
Top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h (155 MPH). The acceleration time from 0 to 100 km/h (62 MPH) is of 4.6 seconds. Like the 4Matic four-wheel-drive system, the nine-speed automatic gearbox of the E43 is standard. Sports suspension is also fitted from the factory on every model, and it has technology inspired from the German company’s AIR Body Control suspension system.
The driver can choose between three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. The response of the suspension, steering, and of the engine will change depending on the driving mode selected. The transmission has four operating modes: Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus. The latter is the fastest and most aggressive available on the 9G-Tronic gearbox.
From a design point of view, the E43 is not a flashy performance variant. It has an understated elegance even with the standard 19-inch alloy wheels. The set of four exhaust tips also gives away this version of the E-Class as having a higher power level than its siblings. The interior has a few trim and other elements that stand out, like the front seats with enhanced lateral support, but designers have kept a dignified appearance for this version of the E-Class.
Mercedes-AMG will publicly unveil the new E43 at the New York Auto Show, held in the second part of this month. European customers will be able to order this new version starting this June, but American clients will have to wait until next year, because that’s when dealers will get their E43 AMGs.
