Each and every year, the Goodwood Festival of Speed is the place to be if high-octane gasoline runs through your veins. This year, the Goodwood FoS will be every bit as special as everyone expects it to be, especially if you’re a fan of McLaren race cars and road-going cars.
Four decades ago, McLaren won the 1976 Formula 1 season with the help of James Hunt, the not-so-gentleman racer who became a Formula 1 commentator after he retired from racing. Indeed, 1976 is the season immortalized in the biographical sports drama Rush, the same season Niki Lauda crashed at the German Grand Prix.
To celebrate the achievement of the late James Hunt, McLaren will bring a special P1 GTR at Goodwood. What’s special about it is that the hybrid hypercar wears a unique livery. With red, yellow, and blue stripes over black, the car echoes the race helmet of James Hunt. Bruno Senna, the nephew of the late Ayrton Senna, will be driving the wheels off this P1 GTR at the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
As an official sponsor of the event, McLaren will also enter a P1 GTR modified by Lanzante. The difference between a McLaren P1 GTR and one modified by Lanzante is that the latter is street legal. And good golly, the P1 GTR that wears license plates will attempt to break the Goodwood hill climb record for road cars. The unofficial record currently stands at 47.9 seconds and the car to beat is the BAC Mono.
This year also marks 50 years since McLaren entered Formula 1. Furthermore, 2016 also marks the 50th anniversary of the Can-Am series, the 100th running of the Indy 500, and 30 years since Alain Prost claimed his second world title in Formula 1.
These milestones couldn’t get by unnoticed by McLaren, which is why the 2016 Goodwood Festival of Speed will see the M8D, M15, and MP4-2C roar back to life on the hill climb. As an added bonus, McLaren will also hold the dynamic debut of the track-only 570S Sprint on the 1.16-mile (1.86-kilometer) Goodwood hill climb.
