While McLaren’s latest offering, the 570S, takes us to a more reasonable area of the supercar world, Woking’s specialists are far from having decided to limit their technical exuberance. For instance, the British carmaker is rumored to be working to release the Spider version of the extreme 675LT.
It seems that McLaren is currently surveying customers in order to see if there’s enough interest on the market in order to build a business case for the 675 LongTail Spider.

Right from the first vehicle open-air McLaren introduced since it returned to road car production, the MP4-12C Spider, the British company demonstrated its Spiders can be just as good as their coupes.

Woking has moved on to the 12C and now to the 650S that served as a base for the extreme 675LT, but the principle remains. This reason alone is enough to serve as an argument that would point towards the existence of a Spider version.

This is no easy task

Nevertheless, we mustn’t take the engineering challenges for granted. The 675LT tips the scales at 2710 lbs (1,230 kg), which makes it 100 kg (220 kg) lighter than the already-sharp 650S. This has been achieved through extreme measures, such as installing the carbon bodied seats of the P1 hypercar.

As for the 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 at the middle of the Mac, 50 percent of its components have been tickled compared to the engine of the 650S. The 666 HP (675 PS) heart of the car can push it past the 124 MPH (200 KM/H) sprint in a mind-blowing 7.9 seconds.

While the 675LT offers superior downforce, for sharper high-speed handling, the top speed is the same, sitting at 205 MPH (330 KM/H).

McLaren is only building 500 units of the 675LT Coupe, so if the Spider is indeed coming and you want one, you’d better not wait too long before making up your mind.
