Mazda to Lease EVs in Japan Starting 2012

Mazda is one of the carmakers that are trying a different approach on electric vehicles. While others are injecting tons of money in advertising campaigns for their new battery powered cars, Mazda will launch a lease option in Japan starting in spring 2012. The electric vehicle to be the subject of the new programme is yet to be named but it will be based on the Demio subcompact and will offer a driving range of around 200 kilometers (124 miles).

Don't be too happy though. You won't have the chance to get the car unless you're part of the local government bodies or fleet customers, as the Mazda programme will initially be limited to these two kinds of businesses.

"Mazda is also continuing its research and development efforts into EVs designed for customers with short city commutes. Through this EV lease program, Mazda hopes to enhance its knowledge of EV usage requirements and electric drive technologies,"
the company said in a press statement.

In the meantime, Mazda will continue to work on its internal combustion engines, so new efficiency enhancement tools are expected to see daylight in the next few years. All efforts will be centered on the SKYACTIC technologies which will begin rolling out around the world this year.

"The internal combustion engine is expected to remain the heart of the automobile for the near future," Mazda says. But, at the same time, "it will advance development of various future eco-friendly technologies in order to offer all its customers driving pleasure as well as outstanding environmental and safety performance."
