The US may be ready to open its road to more diesel automobiles, but it seems that certain automakers are more prepared than other. We’ll zoom zoom in on Mazda for now, as the company recently announced it is delaying the introduction of its Skyactiv-D oil diesel engine in America.
The unit was supposed to arrive in Spring 2014 and Mazda has’n offered the exact date for its new time frame. Nonetheless, the company did explain that the Skyactiv-D unit “can meet emission regulation requirements without the use of a NOx after-treatment system” and yet “it was decided that further development is required to deliver the right balance between fuel economy and Mazda-appropriate driving performance.”
We’ve met the European version of the 2.2-liter Skyactive-D engine and we have to tell you that this is a brilliant powerplant. Thanks to its lower compression ratio, the unit features an aluminium block. This also means smaller combustion temperatures, a key asset for reducing NOx emission levels.
We’re looking forward to meeting Mazda’s AdBlue-less engine soon.
