Mazda’s legendary Wankel-engined sportscar is making a comeback. However, the successor to the legendary RX-7 will arrive in 2017, meaning there will be a 5-year hiatus between that moment and the end of RX-8 production.
The news comes from Mazda’s sports car chief, Nobuhiro Yamamoto, who said the revival of the RX-7 will be timed to coincide with the 50th anniversary of Mazda’s first Wankel-powered car, the Cosmo.
Rumor has it the 16X rotary will be at the heart of the beast, a 1.6-liter motor that during recent testing produced 300 horsepower. “At this time it has not been determined. Maybe later in life it will be turbo, but to start with maybe not,” Yamamoto said about the possibility of forced induction to boost output.
Developing the Wankel into a realistic proposition and fixing all the issues this compact motor has will be difficult but not impossible.
