Lyft Finds It Cute That a Driver Worked Minutes Before Giving Birth

Lyft, Uber and all other companies that work in the same way don't have to answer for what happens to their drivers while they work because they don't technically work FOR them.

There is none of that employer-employee relationship, so everybody is free to work whenever and however they want. That must feel quite liberating for the drivers, but even more so for the companies who don't have to bother with all the legal stuff. Did that Uber driver get in his car after washing down a bottle of painkillers with one liter of whiskey and a six-pack of Red Bulls? That's their problem. Did that Lyft driver take a ride even though her contraction had started for hours and she was on her way to the hospital? Again, it's their choice.

And it is, indeed, their choice. However, you have to ask yourself: what is it that makes people so desperate to work even though they clearly should take a break? Well, you would ask yourself that if you were a person, but not if you were a company such as Lyft. Or the person entrusted with managing its blog, apparently.

On September 6, the Lyft blog published the story of Maven Mia and how she came into this world. Her mother, Mary, was nine months pregnant when she started taking passengers one night, but soon after that, she began having contractions. Long story short, she continued driving up until it became quite clear that the contractions weren't going anywhere. When she decided to go to the hospital, she received one more ride request. Mary took it, then drove herself to the hospital where Maven Mia was born.

Mary was an adult who knew very well what she was doing (actually, she didn't, as she had no idea she had entered labor, but that's not the point), so there's nothing wrong with Lyft's story from that point of view. Still, failing to see how working right until the moment you give birth is at least a little disturbing and assuming that any story involving a baby is cute, those are signs that somebody has their decency compass all messed up.

But, anyway, if you have any other exciting Lyft stories like Maven Mia's, you can send it to the blog's administrator. But before you do, just to maximize your chances of having it published, make sure it would also make for a good Tales from the Crypt episode.
