Trike drifting is possibly one of the “x-sports” with the very fastest growth in the US, and it looks like it’s also spreading across the pond. Arizona-based transportation design community Local Motors is proud to announce that the crowdfunding campaign for the electric, power-version of the Verrado drift trike is already seeing its goal met, so the trike goes into production.
The Verrado Electric Drift Trike is a crazy and fun as it gets: you get all the haute-tension drifting action, but you no longer need a hillside, and the friend who used to tow the bikes back uphill can now enjoy drifting alongside you. And yes, this means drifting contest in the parking lot at the mall and pretty much anywhere else!
Power comes from a Lithium Cobalt Manganese battery which offers a 12 miles (19 km) range and 45 minutes operation, with these figures obviously affected by how aggressive your drifts are. The BMX fork is loaded with a 20” machined aluminium wheel with the hub motor in the center. The design is open-source and can be hacked, so improvements will surely arrive.
Local Motors plan an upgrade kit which can be used to add electric power to existing gravity-powered Verrado trikes, and we’ll let you know when it becomes available. So far you can still get the Verrado Electric Drift Trike for a “second-fastest bird” price of $1,560 (€). The early bird offer was $1,400 but it’s sold out.
