Say welcome to Lumos, one of the sleekest and nicely-crafted "smart" bicycle helmets we stumbled upon lately. Lumos was prototyped and went on Kickstarter to secure funding for mass production, and the response was amazing.
With 12 days remaining in the crowdfunding campaign, the Lumos attracted around five times the initial goal, and is therefore expected to enter production this fall, with the first helmets delivered worldwide in April 2016.

Not unlike Harry Potter's Lumos spell, the Lumos helmet has a touch of magic about it, albeit it's completely derived from smart engineering. Eu-wen Ding and Jeff Chen, the creators of Lumos, are avid cyclists and they know how though things are when riding in low-light consitions.

So they set out to create a helmet that incorporates more than 60 LEDs grouped in several modules. 14 white ones for the headlight that allows other to see better a cyclist approaching from the front, and 16 red ones for the riding light at the back of the head. Even more LEDs are grouped in the shape of two outside-facing arrows that serve as turn signals.

The turn signals car activated with a press of a button, as Lumos comes with a trick two-button bar-mount selector that's waterproof and communicates wirelessly with the helmet.

An integrated accelerometer knows when you slow down

Lumos incorporates an accelerometer that senses when the rider is slowing down and lights up all the LEDs at the back of the helmet, just like a motorcycle or automotive brake light system would.

Power comes from a small and lightweight 1000mAh rechargeable battery you can effortlessly connect to any microUSB source. A small charger is also included in the package.

As the lights on the Lumos helmet can be set to either Always on or Strobe mode, a full battery will last for either 1.5 or 2.5 hours, respectively. The Turn Signal Remote is powered by a common CR2032 button cell that can be bought anywhere.

Lumos is completely waterproof so riding in the rain will not damage it, With a weight of 410 grams (under a pound), Lumos is comparable to any hard-shell helmet out there.

This lid has already received CPSC helmet Safety Certifications for use un the US, and EN1078 for street use in Europe. Limited editions hand-painted Lumos helmets will also be available for an extra price, bu the stock colors are white and black.

Speaking of prices, Lumos is available for $119 (€108) plus shipping, and comes in two sizes.
