What’s the point of having a large car, like a crossover, if you cant occasionally take six more passengers with you to go for dinner or a short journey? That’s what many buyers today are asking too, and Lexus believes his model would fit a lot more customers if it had a third row.
The crossover segment in Lexus’ lineup is currently filled by the RX model. It’s based on the Toyota Highlander, but despite that being offered now with seven seats, the RX will have to wait a bit more until its outdated shapes will be refreshed and extra seats will be added. And that’s because the all-new NX compact crossover is launching later this year.

"Third-row seating is the No. 1 issue we hear from dealers," Lexus Division chief Jeff Bracken said at the New York Auto Show. “We feel like we're missing a 35,000-units-a-year opportunity. We're working hard to rectify that."

Currently, if you want a Lexus for seven, you can get an larger GX or the full size LX, but those are big, lumpy, body-on-frame SUVs, for which people seem to have less attraction.

Lexus feels the need for a smaller RX-like crossover to host seven passengers, but whether it’s going to be the RX, a longer wheelbase version, same wheelbase but longer or even a whole new vehicle, we and not even the automaker has any clue now.

"It could be any number of solutions," Bracken said. "We could bring it to market in 2016 or 2017. If we can get it, that's the priority. We won't be bothered if it steps on RX. We want it."
