Lexus has revealed a stunning coupe this year, and it comes with a V8 engine and rear-wheel-drive.
It is called the LC, and there’s also a hybrid version that comes with a complicated system in Lexus’ offer. First previewed in 2015 under the name of LF-LC, the LC stood for “Luxury Coupe,” but it appears that the Japanese brand is seriously considering building a cabriolet version as well.
After all, it already has two models that compete with Mercedes-Benz’s S-Class, so why not make a cabriolet to round things off, and ensure that they get a one-on-one fight out of this?
The most recent convertible concept from Lexus was the LF-C2, which was showcased at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, shortly after its global debut at the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show. Evidently, the LF-C2 was not in the segment of the LC, being sized closer to BMW’s 4 Series Cabriolet, but that does not change the fact that the Japanese brand is still interested in the drop-top segment.
In the case of the possible LC Cabriolet, Lexus could launch a car like that in mid-2018, if we were to be optimistic. While a model like this could bring considerable profit margins to the brand, Lexus would still have to justify the development costs of a convertible version of one of its most expensive models.
The brand will also have to decide whether to offer a hybrid version of this body style, or if it should go against what it stands for today.
Regardless of the hybrid version of the potential Lexus LC Cabriolet, the LC500 convertible has the shot of becoming one of the nicest-sounding models in the segment. It features a naturally-aspirated V8 engine with a direct injection system, which comes from the GS F.
That engine is not the leader of performance when V8 engines are concerned, but it is good enough for 475 HP at 7,100 rpm, along with 530 Nm of torque between 4,800 and 5,600 rpm. Any top-of-the-line premium convertible will not let you row through the gears, so this model should get the company’s 10-speed-automatic.
