Introduced in 2013, the third-generation Lexus IS (XE30) is what the IS should’ve been in the first place. The compact executive car market is booming, and the Japanese outfit knows that, the reason why Lexus has introduced an all-new engine option for the spindle grille-licious IS sedan.
Coupled to the AA81 eight-speed Sport Direct Shift auto, the 2-liter turbocharged petrol motor is slated to go on sale in Europe in September. An interesting detail about the engine is that it promises “superior smoothness and responsiveness, with no turbo lag and high fuel efficiency.”

The same powerplant we find under the hood of the Lexus NX and RX, the 2-point-Oh force-fed mill delivers 245 PS (241 bhp / 180 kW) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft). In terms of 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h), the stint is covered in 7 seconds dead. Average fuel economy for the 2015 Lexus IS 200t? 7 liters per 100 km, the equivalent of 33.6 US mpg or 40.4 UK mpg.

By comparison, the less powerful BMW F30 3 Series in 320i 8AT form does the sprint in 7.3 seconds. In the Bimmer’s defense, it’s a more fuel efficient engine. Now back to the IS 200t’s engine. Internally referred to as 8AR-FTS, the 2-liter lump features Dual VVT-iW, D-4ST fuel injection technology, a four-into-two exhaust manifold, a twin-scroll turbo, as well as a water-cooled cylinder head.

With this engine, the 2015 Lexus IS 200t tips the scales at 1,590 kilograms (3,505 lbs) and is rated 1,500 kg (3,307 lbs) in terms of towing capacity. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you can tow stuff with an IS. Mind you, most customers will rather use the 480-liter (17 cuFT) capacity of the trunk.
