One of the most interesting subjects of last week was the Aventador "Miura 50" edition that marked half a century since the debut of the mid-engined icon. Everybody said it was a shameless cash grab from Lamborghini.
After all, when Ford wanted to celebrate the GT, it didn't dress a Mustang to look like it had the engine at the back. And why make 50, when the original was only saw 764 examples?
We can now look at the Aventador Miura special edition in the flesh, as it has made its debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed 2016. At first, the 1 of 50 model is seen sitting under a protective bubble that shelters it from the rain. But eventually, the weather clears, and it can be filmed more clearly.
It's striking how much the supposed tribute to the Miura looks like Iron Man armor. That's not surprising since the current V12 supercar is too futuristic to ever resemble a sports car from the Ford Thunderbird era.
Perhaps we are praising it by comparing the Aventador to Iron Man. No, it's more like last year's Samsung S6 Edge Iron Man tribute phone, in that it doesn't mix the construction medium with the source material.
That's not to say there's something embarrassing about owning the Miura tribute. That is, your friends will hate if you own one just because it's expensive, not because they dislike this paint combination. And if this one isn't for you, there are a few other retro-fantastic looks that borrow the silver on yellow or green the Miura was known for.
Another great example of Lamborghini cutting corners is the engine, which has been left in the same 700 horsepower configuration. A special edition supercar with the output from 2011 is like fighting the US army with weapons from the stone age.
