445 horsepower (332 kW) and 910 lb-ft (1,234 Nm). That’s how potent the redesigned Duramax 6.6-liter V8 is for the model year 2017. Internally referred to as L5P, the newest Duramax is available in the Chevy Silverado HD and its GMC-branded sibling.
General Motors has sold just about 2 million vehicles equipped with Duramax engines in the past 15 years. In the face of Ford’s Power Stroke V8 and Ram Truck’s Cummins inline-6, the L5P Duramax is a worthy challenger. With 90 percent of the torque sustained from 1,550 to 2,850 rpm, the L5P Duramax retains the displacement, bore, and stroke of the former-generation engine.

“Nearly everything about the Duramax is new, designed to produce more torque at lower rpm and more confidence when trailering or hauling,” explains chief engineer Gary Arvan. “You’ll also notice the refinement improvements the moment you start the engine, and appreciate them as you cruise quietly down the highway — with or without a trailer.” What’s more, the L5P Duramax 6.6-liter turbo diesel mill is compatible with B20 bio-diesel.

At the heart of the L5P Duramax is an electronically controlled turbocharging system, complete with variable-vane technology and a maximum boost pressure of 28 psi. Another highlight comes in the form of something called Venturi Jet Drain Oil Separator. A first in this pickup truck segment, this solution “collects the fine mist of oil entrained in the blow-by gas and uses a small portion of the boosted air generated by the turbocharger to pump the collected oil back to the engine oil sump for re-use by the engine.”

Produced in the United States of America by DMAX Ltd. In Moraine, Ohio, the L5P Duramax in the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado HD and 2017 GMC Sierra HD is matched with a tried-and-tested Allison 1000 6-speed auto box. The transmission boasts Tow/Haul mode, a feature that reduces shift cycling for improved cooling when towing or hauling seriously heavy loads.
