Transport Canada and the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission inform customers that the 2014 model year KTM 1290 Super Duke R naked motorcycles might be affected by a fuel line issue.
According to the two safety organizations, one of the overflow pipes of the bike's fuel tank might have been manufactured incorrectly. In the affected motorcycles an error in the manufacturing process might have caused an irregularity in the plastic coating. In certain conditions, these pipes might rupture and cause fuel to leak.
The customers could be exposed to hazardous, easily-flammable fumes, while the risk of a vehicle fire would increase significantly. Due to the architecture of the motorcycle, if significant amounts of fumes or fuel are expelled through the rupture, they can be ignited even in the absence of open fire sources.
Dealers will inspect the overflow fuel line and replace it with a corresponding one if found defective. No incidents or injuries have been so far reported. The total number of motorcycles potentially affected is yet unknown, and we only learned that KTM recalled 78 1290 Super Duke R machines in Canada.
