Kira Hybrid Yacht Is Computer Controlled, Solar-Powered and Sailed by One

Bronze winner at 2014 International Design Excellence Awards, Kira Hybrid Sail-Yacht is a 131 feet (40 meters) long vessel designed to be computer controlled and sailed by a crew of one. The lead in the keel of the boat was adapted to become a giant battery charged by the solar cells in the sail, which makes the vessel have a zero carbon footprint.

According to its creator, Kira Sail Yacht was inspired by performance, developed for simplicity and styled minimally. It is meant to bridge the gap between sail and motor yacht, so that those who take to the winds can do so in the most comfortable and amenable way. The sails are equipped with solar panels on the horizontal ribs, utilizing the sail’s surface area to power all amenities and electric engines.

Lead in the keel has been replaced with lead batteries thus utilizing weight to create performance. The flybridge is designed to provide the owner with the ultimate sailing experience. Gunnel walls retract and hide inside the deck to allow passengers to board the vessel with ease and comfort, and a swim platform was included to allow the owners to go for a swim.

The hull was revised by a Naval Architect in Sweden and had to be adapted for more comfortable sea keeping without sacrificing performance. By redefining the decks of the boat, it gained more than 80% in livable area, making this an extremely efficient boat.

The best part of this vessel is that it was designed to be comfortable and luxurious like motor yachts while at the same time it is efficient and fast like racing sailboats, and all that while it remains eco-friendly. The vessel was not yet built, but a Kira scale model was shown in 2012.
