Kia Georgia Plant Starts 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe Production

The Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia (KMMG) announced the launch of a second shift of production at its new West Point facility, which adds capacity to build the Hyundai Santa Fe. The second shift, which brings more than 600 new team members to the manufacturing team, has also been added in response to the growing 2011 Kia Sorento sales.

The Santa Fe is currently offered with a choice of two engines, a 2.4l that develops 175 horsepower and a 3.5l Lambda V6 outputting 276 horsepower.

Compared to the 2010 version, the new Santa Fe comes equipped with six standard airbags, including side air curtain airbags, ABS with BA, EBD, ESC, three-point seatbelts and adjustable head restraints and Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

"KMMG has produced 100,000 Sorentos to date and the quality, craftsmanship and attention to detail that goes into building the Sorento from the entire KMMG team has helped make it the best-selling Kia vehicle in the United States,"
Byung Mo Ahn, group president and CEO of Kia Motors America and Kia Motors Manufacturing Georgia, said in a statement.

"With the addition of our second shift we are building on that foundation to increase KMMG's volume and increase our commitment to the U.S. and local economy," added Mo Ahn.

The addition of the second shift brings the total number of jobs created at the plant to more than 2,000. Also, suppliers have hired more than 5,200 people for jobs created to support production at the plant.

According to Kia, More than 1,000 KMMG team members traveled to Korea for hands-on experience working with the parent company.
