Jeremy Clarkson, as I’m sure you already know by now, is no longer an asset of the BBC, nor the top dog of Top Gear. Despite that, he’s doing well, thank you! Other than The Grand Tour and DriveTribe, the British big kahuna also writes for The Sunday Times Driving, where he contributes with a test drive every week or so.
Needless to say this, but post-Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson still finds himself in a position where he can borrow whichever car he prefers, whenever he wants. And oh boy, does JC drive a lot of cars, both boring and special. His latest write-up for The Sunday Times Driving sees the 56-year-old British broadcaster run a list of the most exciting cars he had driven so far this year.
In no particular order, the said top ten contains two intruders. Those are the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTi Tech Line and the Volvo XC90 D5. You might have noticed it too, but these two models run on Satan’s fuel. Back when JC had a little bit more hair, he famously said that diesel-engined cars are slow. Here’s a an extremely telling quote: “Sure it’s quiet, for a diesel. But that’s like being well-behaved… for a murderer.” Oh well, let’s move on.
The remaining nameplates in Jeremy Clarkson’s Star Cars list, the ones that give JC “the fizz,” are the following: Mazda MX-5 2.0 Sport Recaro, Alfa Romeo 4C coupe, Mercedes-AMG GT S, Ford Focus RS, Ford Mustang Fastback 5.0 V8 GT, BMW M2, Ferrari 488 GTB, and Lamborghini Aventador. Because talk is cheap and time is money and time’s a-wasting, I’ll go on and highlight three quotes which define three cars from the list.
First, and foremost, here’s Jeremy Clarkson on the fourth-gen Mazda MX-5 Miata: “It’s a cure for depression, this car, it really is. You just can’t be in a bad mood when you’re driving it.” The second quote that managed to catch my attention by the scruff of the neck concerns the Mercedes-AMG GT S: “It’s Merc’s Mustang [...] Of all the vehicles in this bit of the market, it’d almost certainly be my choice,” the wooly mammoth writes.
And finally, my favorite Jeremy Clarkson opinion of the lot concerns the Alfa Romeo 4C in fixed-head coupe form: “It’s a terrible car. And yet I adored it. Every other vehicle, with its perfect refinement and its perfect electrics, cannot help but feel like a machine. Whereas the Alfa, with its flaws and its tendency to go where it wants, feels human.” Amen!
