Jeep Officially Announces Interest in China Production

Chrysler has been eyeing the Chinese car market for a while now, and they plan to eventually move all Jeep production of cars destined to be sold in the area, to China. Group officials are now in talks with their Chinese partners, from the Gunangzhou Automobile Group Co. to restart Jeep production in the country, after it had been stopped in 2009, after Fiat’s takeover of Chrysler.

According to Mike Manley, COO of Fiat and Chrysler in Asia, said that they have already gone through “very detailed conversations” with Guangzhou Automobile officials, and that "the volume opportunity for us is very significant [. . .] We're reviewing the opportunities within existing capacity (and) localizing the entire Jeep portfolio or some of the Jeep portfolio."

The plan is to initially produce 140,000 cars per year, with a final target of 500,000 units per year. Signs are good, though, with Chrysler reporting a 22% increase in its international sales up to September, when compared to last year’s numbers, reaching a total of 153,154 units sold - 117,189 were Jeeps.
