Jay Leno owns a few Jaguars, but he doesn't have the ultra-rare XJ220. Looking at this review he has just released, you get the feeling that he regrets it. He's not alone either, as people will still pay half a million dollars for one today, if not more.
The XJ220 is the most exciting car Jaguar has ever built. Today, you can buy an F-Type with more power, but it won't classify as a true exotic. With the C-X75 project canned, it will take a while before we get something that's this cool from the Brits. In fact, we're not even sure they'll make another supercar.

The XJ220 gets its name from the top speed it could theoretically achieve. Even though Jaguar couldn't find a runway long enough to let its rare cat stretch its legs, it still took the title of world's fastest car from the Ferrari F40. However, that still wasn't enough to make it successful.

While the Ferrari's engine delivered a linear surge of power. the Jaguar suffered from turbo lag. The concept that previewed the XJ220 had a V12 engine and AWD. However, due to weight restrictions imposed on the tires, engineers had to make due with a twin-turbo V6. That was great for speed, but it wasn't exotic enough in an era when family sedans had V6 engines too.

When Jaguar announced the engine change, some people tried to sell their initial deposits while others simply gave up and didn't buy the XJ220. At the time, the global economy was also pinched, and it felt like the supercar market had sprung a leak.

In person, the XJ220 strikes you as a colossal car. Jay Leno compares the back end to Kim Kardashian, and considering it's a 7-footer, it's not unjustified. Despite this, the two men are rubbing elbows and the cabin would feel very claustrophobic without the glass roof. Despite the size, there was nearly no room for luggage or golf clubs. The front was filled with fans, the middle with an engine and the back had a big wing and some aero effects.

As a tribute to the Concorde era, the XJ220 also had as many dials as an aircraft and unique aluminum honeycomb construction.

He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
