Volkswagen has only been focusing hard on the Japanese market for a couple of years, but their efforts are showing. We've seen all sorts of crazy tuning projects involving Golfs and even the tiny Up! city car, which appears to have found favour with buyers there. German chic is catching in the land of Toyotas and Nissans quite well, and now their fastest car ever is also available… only it’s not that fast any more.
The Japanese market Golf R was announced two days ago and its powertrain came as quite a surprise for us. Instead of getting the 300 PS version of a European model, the “JDM” car has a less powerful 280 PS version, like the one you get in the Scirocco. Still, it’s got 24 PS and 50 Nm more than the old model, so it’s not all bad news.

We don’t know if it was a problem with homologation or the price, but since the Golf R went on sale from JPY 5.1 million, a massive $50,000, we’re leaning towards the latter. Still, Japanese buyers get standard DSG.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
