Jaguar’s Electric SUV Teased Ahead of 2016 LA Auto Show

After the spy photographers caught test mules and early prototypes of the thing out in the open, Jaguar finally let it slip that “exciting news” is coming our way in the coming days. On November 14, at the 2016 LA Auto Show, Jaguar will show us a concept that heralds the brand’s upcoming pure electric SUV.

At the present moment, there are merely two hints as to what the Jaguar electric SUV concept has in store from us, coming courtesy of a video teaser posted by the manufacturer on Twitter. First and most importantly, we have a close-up shot of the upper part of the front fascia. The creases in the hood and the grille’s outline are clear indicators this ain’t an electric F-Pace. If my eyes aren’t playing tricks on me, the center rear seat appears to be absent.

Our second and final tell-tale sign that this is a different animal from the F-Pace comes in the form of a wheel. Notice the silver-and-black finish and the futuristic design that resembles the BMW i3’s style 429 turbine wheels? Also, please pay attention to the concept car-like tread of those Jaguar-branded tires. Indeed, boys and girls, this Jag has the makings of an eco-friendly SUV.

These being said, not much else is known about Jaguar’s electric SUV concept or the production model that will follow in 2017, not even the name. Often referred to as the E-Pace, Jaguar’s zero-emissions sport utility vehicle is expected to pack a 70 kWh lithium-ion battery and all-wheel-drive, the latter made possible by two electric motors: one integrated in the front axle, one in the rear. The rumor mill suggests to expect 200 and 110 horsepower, respectively, as well as a range of up to 300 miles (483 kilometers).

On the flipside, word on the street is that the chassis of the whatever-it-will-be-called can accommodate hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains. The wildest of rumors make a case for a diesel-electric powertrain, which is a bit meh if I’m to be honest. Will Jaguar keep the E-Pace pure electric or will it follow the Citroen DS5 Hybrid’s lead in this regard? Let's wait and see.
