iSport Sign Van Der Garde and Nunes for Main Series
The team proceeded to completely change its driver lineup this year as a result of both Bruno Senna and Karun Chandhok taking on new commitments outside/inside the series. The Brazilian chose to stick with Honda's F1 Racing team no matter what and risk taking a year off racing should the Brackley-based team fail to find an investor soon enough, while Chandhok signed a deal with Tiago Monteiro's Ocean Racing Technology for 2009.
Van Der Garde has already signed a deal with iSport last year, only it was restricted to the Asian Series. The Dutch driver is currently 9th overall in the standings with 3 rounds to go. While confirmed for the Main Series in 2009, Van Der Garde will be joined by Nunes, currently competing for Piquet Sports in the Asian Series.
“We are delighted to have Giedo and Diego on board for the 2009 series. We have been building a good relationship with Giedo during the Asia Series and he was impressive during the winter testing. We were equally impressed with Diego after he tested with us at Paul Ricard last year, and with a year's experience in GP2 he will be a valuable addition to the team,” said team principal Paul Jackson.
This would be Nunes' second consecutive campaign inside the Main Series, following his debut with David Price Racing in 2008. He only scored 3 points last season, finishing the year as the 22nd best driver of the series. Van Der Garde, on the other hand, won last year's World Series by Renault and even ran a short testing program with the Renault F1 team at Barcelona, last November.
