Is Chevrolet Planning a 2015 Tahoe Z71 Package [UPDATE]

Earlier today, Chevrolet revealed some new technologies being introduce mid model year on the 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe. In the picture, though, GM Authority caught what seemed to be an Easter Egg of sorts as this particular model is brazenly wearing a set of “Z71” badges on the liftgate and C-pillar.
A quick check of the 2015 Tahoe option package reveals that Chevrolet has not yet announced a Tahoe Z71 for the 2015 model year. In fact, last year GM trucks executive chief engineer Jeff Luke seemed to indicate that this package might be dropped for the new design in favor of a more capable off-road variant.

Further proof that this might hint at a production Tahoe Z71 is the fact that the vehicle in the image above is wearing a different design for the 18-inch wheels currently available on the Tahoe, and one that is identical to the 2014 Silverado Z71 equipped with the LTZ trim level. Unfortunately, this is the only angle of the Tahoe Z71 that Chevrolet released, so we’re not sure what other off-road goodies have been carried over from the Silverado.

Checking the Silverado’s spec sheet, the Z71 adds 46mm high-pressure gas-charged shocks, a 36mm front stabilizer bar, off-road jounce bumpers, transfer case skid plate, high-capacity air cleaner, Hill Descent Control and a locking rear differential that is part of the standard Trailering Package. While a nice set of meaty off-road tires could make the Tahoe Z71 really stand out in the full-size SUV crowd, this picture reveals that it is wearing P255/65R18 Goodyear Assurance CS Fuel Max tires.

For a more aggressive, off-road appearance, the Silverado Z71 is also equipped with tow hooks, brushed metal sill plates, distinctive gauge cluster and trim plates as well as a differ front fascia and grille design. Again, it’s hard to say what Chevrolet has in store for the Tahoe Z71, but based on this image and the fact that Chevrolet has yet to announce anything, we could see it debut closer to the end of the year when other mid-year changes – like the eight-speed automatic – show up.

UPDATE: In a brief press release posted below, Chevrolet confirmed that the 2015 Tahoe and Suburban will both be adding a Z71 package. More information will be revealed in late September.
