In theory, speed bumps should work as a perfect form of keeping things safe in certain areas, but real life has shown us there are plenty of ways in which such obstacles can catch drivers off guard.
This is precisely what we see in the footage below, which shows drivers in Saudi Arabia practicing for their private pilot license after meeting one of these speed bumps. The safety element had been newly installed and with driver failing to spot it during the night, their vehicles were sent flying.

As strange as that might look when it comes to passenger cars, a small bus going airborne definitely makes for the icing on this cake.

Why do speed bumps look like that in Saudi Arabia?

Drivers in other parts of the world might be wondering how a speed bump can launch your vehicle that high. The explanation is rather simple. Saudi Arabia, and a few other places around it, use the kind of extended speed bumps you see in this clip on many occasions.

That’s because Saudi Arabians don’t mess around when they’re behind the wheel. Normal speed bumps would bring a speed reduction that might just be too abrupt. The people use the full acceleration potential of regularly-powered cars.

For instance, going through a roundabout over there can sometimes be a bit like negotiating a storm on a ship. Once you get used to their... dynamic driving, everything is OK though.

Interestingly enough, there are certain areas where pedestrian crossings are signaled with special paint designs. This makes them resemble speed bumps such as the one shown here, so drivers that do not know them by heart will slow down anyway to avoid ending up like the people in the clip below. In the end, you can’t argue with fewer crashes on the road.
