Hyundai Reports Best-Ever May Sales

It looks like putting all that effort into becoming the most fuel efficient automaker in the US payed off for Hyundai Motors America, as the South Korean car brand reported its best-ever May sales for the month that just ended.

The company saw its sales increased by 14 percent over the same month a year ago to 67,019 units, thus recording the best monthly sales for the month of May ever. Of these, 38 percent were 40-mpg cars.

The Sonata was Hyundai’s best selling model, accounting for 20,765 units delivered in May, followed closely by the smaller Elantra with 18,877 units.

“The industry experienced choppier waters than anticipated in May,” said Dave Zuchowski, executive vice president of sales. “While industry demand and traffic remained strong, consumer confidence was clearly conflicted with a recovering market being hedged against the inherent uncertainties of a looming presidential election and some disappointing housing and unemployment news. Amidst this economic backdrop and our own very low inventories, we felt great about setting yet another monthly volume record and are really well positioned for what we fully expect to be a robust summer sales period.”
