According to Chinese website AutoHome, Hyundai has applied for a paten filing for its 2013 Elantra Coupe in order to protect its design against ‘cloning’ in the local market.
Currently, only the Elantra Sedan is offered in China under the name Elantra Langdong and is assembled locally by the Beijing-Hyundai joint venture.
The current Elantra Coupe was first shown at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show and is based on the sedan that won the North American Car of the Yea for 2012.
In America, the twi-door is offered with the 148 horsepower 1.8-liter Nu four-cylinder engine, mated to a six-speed manual or automatic gearbox. It combines 40 mpg of highway efficiency (5.9 l/100km) with a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) time of 9.3 seconds. In China, there will also likely be a 1.6-liter version with 127 horsepower.
