As you can see above, the Hyundai Elantra Coupe was the basis for the Zombie Survival Machine, but it looks like the car may have gotten bit. According to reports, the coupe version of the Hyundai Elantra could suffer the same fate as the undead it’s trying to protect its passengers from.
Automobile Magazine is reporting that Hyundai plans to drop the Elantra Coupe following a run-off 2014 model year despite only having been on the market since 2012. This is a shame, though, since the Elantra Coupe – along with its sister car, the Kia Forte Koup – is one of the better looking and sportier models in this segment that consists of the Scion tC and Honda Civic Coupe.

The entire Elantra lineup was refreshed for 2014, but it appears that things didn’t work out for the Coupe, which along with the Elantra GT hatchback was just in its second model year. Despite the tweaked styling the more powerful standard engine, sales of this two-door-Elantra never seemed to take off, and although Hyundai doesn’t break out sales of the three Elantra body styles, the fact that few Coupes can be found on the road is evidence enough that the car just wasn’t very popular among buyers.

While the Elantra Sedan is built in Montgomery, AL, both the Elantra Coupe and Elantra GT hatchback are built in South Korea. While the GT has likely helped to bolster the Elantra lineup, the Coupe has more than likely been a key reason why Elantra sales are down almost 10 percent this year. Through July, the Elantra is still the best-selling product in the Hyundai lineup, but the Sonata is closing in fast.

Interestingly, another report from Driving.ca indicates that despite the Elantra Coupe being dropped in the U.S., the compact coupe has been confirmed to live on at least through the 2015 model year in Canada.
