Hybrids and EVs Dominate the Top 10 List of Fastest Selling Used Cars

Our friends at iSeeCars have returned with a new study. This time around, the online automotive search engine and research website has covered the subject of fastest-selling used cars in the United States. Surprisingly, hybrids and EVs are at the forefront.

But first, how did the website come up with the top 10 list we’ll be talking about in the next paragraph? Well, iSeeCars.com started by analyzing 2.2 million used car sales from January 1 through May 31, 2016, including the number of days the cars were listed for sale.

These said, let’s go through the results, starting from the fastest-selling used car: Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid (19.7 average days on market), Nissan Leaf (24.3), Tesla Model S (26.1), Hyundai Veloster Turbo (27.8), Infiniti QX60 (27.9), Infinity QX56 (29), Lexus CT 200h (29.4), Toyota Highlander Hybrid (29.6), Lexus RX 350 (29.7), and Mazda2 (29.9). Stunning, isn't it?

Considering that one- to three-year-old used cars take an average of 42.4 days to sell, the nameplates that made the top 10 are unsung heroes in their own right. Five of the top 10 are either hybrid, PHEV or pure EVs. The Honda Civic and Toyota Camry also sell faster than average, yet they’re outside of this surprising top 10.

"For these fastest selling cars, the market may have hit a sweet spot where the pricing of these particular alternative fuel cars has dropped enough to make these cars more desirable," explained iSeeCars.com head honcho Phong Ly. The analysis of year-over-year data for one- to three-year-old used cars indicates that electric car prices have dropped by $3,830 on average driving an 8-day decrease in days on market. The more pressing question is, why is the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid so frigging popular with the U.S. public?

The study found out that 54 percent of the analyzed Toyota Prius PHEVs were sold in California. In Cali, plug-in hybrids with a single occupant are allowed to use the HOV lanes. Up to this moment in time, the 85,000 statutory Green Clean Air Vehicle Sticker limit has been reached. Because used Prius PHEVs come with the Green Clean Air Vehicle Sticker, the demand for such a car is through the roof. Simple as that.
