Yasuyuki Yoshinaga, the company’s CEO, has announced some interesting details about the Subaru Global Platform and the upcoming WRX STI at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show.
The new model is set to launch in 2017 and the exterior of the car will be improved with some newly designed parts, such as more aggressive-looking fenders, carbon-fiber air ducts, a rear diffuser, and a newly developed rear wing.

While you would probably expect for the outside of the car to be sportier than the previous generation, the biggest surprise might come from under the hood. Like all the other carmakers, the Japanese company is trying to improve fuel economy while maintaining the class-leading performance of the STI, so local engineers are working on a new powertrain. Beside a revised version of the turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine, there will also be an electric motor.

On top of that, engineers from Subaru are also working on a new four-wheel-drive system using a “motor-drive” on the rear axle.

Regarding the power, no figures have been given so far, but what we know is that it will be transmitted to the wheels via a new dual-clutch six-speed automated manual gearbox. Because of these new features, the vehicle should achieve fuel economy figures revolving somewhere around 6.5 liters per 100 kilometers (36.2 mpg).

According to Motoring, Subaru is also testing a plug-in hybrid version of the new STI, which could be shown at the 2018 Tokyo Motor Show.

If you are asking what’s all the fuss about this hybrid trend, you should know that Subaru has to keep pushing and make a lot of efforts to adhere to more strict U.S. emissions regulations, and that is why this new Subaru Global Platform has been configured to carry battery packs, electric motors and support hardware.

Even so, the Japanese company is expected to sell 600,000 units in North America by the end of 2015, which would mean an eight per cent rise over last year.
