We’re definitely living in a weird world. After BMW launched the 2 Series Active Tourer as more of a practical car than a racer, we’re now seeing it being tested on the Nurburgring. That’s not as unusual as the fact that this is no ordinary 2er, this is a hybrid.
Just as we speculated a while ago, the BMW i3 electric propulsion technology will be dripping down to other models as well and the 2 Series Active tourer seems to be no exception.

Apart from the obvious “Hybrid Test Vehicle” stickers, there are more cues that gave this car away like the extra ‘fuel cap’ on the front left fender and the i Blue color. Some aerodynamic parts also seem different, like the front bumper, the side skirts, rear bumper and the roof spoiler.

While weird at first, such a move made sense, especially in a people carrier that will most likely be used inside the city. The drivetrain will probably be similar to the one used on the BMW X5 eDrive Concept, having a 2-liter turbocharged petrol engine under the bonnet along with an electric engine making around 90 HP.

Batteries will be stored under the luggage department in the back and not in the center tunnel as we’re expecting the hybrid 2 Series Active Tourer to use xDrive as well.

However, the 340 HP combined power the X5 has at its disposal seems a bit too much so a smaller 1.5-liter 3-cylinder engine could be used instead, driving the total power output towards a grand total of 250 HP. The official specs as well as a confirmation from BMW that they are actually working on a hybrid model are yet to be released. Testing it on the Nurburging still doesn't make too much sense, though...
