In our guide to the LS engine family, the LS3 V8 holds a special place in automotive history for bringing unprecedented performance to the small-block genre. After it had made its debut in the 2008 Corvette, the LS3 went on to power lots of GM products.
The Holden Commodore VF II is one of those cars. Introduced in 2015, the VF II update brought the LS3 under the hood of the full-size sedan, replacing the L77 6.0-liter V8. HSV, the performance-oriented division of Holden, didn’t follow suit. Now, though, HSV decided that the 6.2-liter LS3 V8 is worthy of making an appearance in a trio of special models.

Dubbed the SV Black, the first of three limited edition models from HSV will be available in ClubSport R8 and Maloo R8 form. Albeit styling is similar to that of the LSA-powered standard models, the SV Black special edition brings unique cues such as the 20-inch alloys, the black-painted AP Racing 4-piston brake calipers, black lower door accenting, and so forth. Of course, the business end of the SV Black is the 340 kW (456 HP) 6.2-liter LS3 small-block V8.

Production of the SV Black is slated to commence in June. In terms of pricing, Holden Special Vehicles wants AUD $62,990 for the Maloo R8 SV Black and AUD $65,990 for the ClubSport R8 SV Black. Build for the New Zealand market is restricted to 18 units of the ClubSport R8 SV Black and 2 units of the Maloo R8 SV Black. “These SV Black models represent the very essence of HSV - great value performance cars. They will, quite simply, be the best value limited editions we’ve ever offered”, said Tim Jackson, the managing director of HSV.

In September, Holden Special Vehicles will launch two other LS3-powered special edition models. Dubbed the Grange SV and ClubSport R8 Track Edition, these babies hold a retail price of AUD $86,990 and AUD $68,990, respectively. "We’re confident we’ve delivered on all counts and that our fan base will be eager to capitalize on this last opportunity to buy an LS3-powered HSV, especially at these prices,” added Jackson.
