The new kid on the block, the one everyone talks about, is finally here. Mercedes’ AMG GT is one heck of a machine with the specs to match. However, apart from the expected comparisons with the F-Type Coupe and the Porsche 911 could any other car, possibly cheaper, match up?
Us, being BMW aficionados to some extinct (this is the BMW Power Blog after all), thought about the M4 as soon as we heard the performance figures this car bragged with. They are so close between them that a comparison immediately had to be done.

The AMG GT uses a brand new engine developed by the Affalterbach division, dubbed internally M178. This is a 4-liter biturbo plant with Bosch piezo injection that can deliver up to 7 injections per cycle. At the same time, the cylinder barrels are made of Nanoslide, a new material from Mercedes that is supposed to reduce friction.

Thanks to the engineers' research, the GT has 462 HP and 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) of torque at its disposal to reach benchmark and top speeds as fast as possible. Speaking of which, the 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint is done in 4 seconds while the top speed is rated at 304 km/h (188 mph). Impressive, right?

Well, the M4 can do basically the same stuff with a smaller engine. The new model uses a 3-liter inline 6-cylinder unit with two turbochargers as well, capable of sending 431 HP and 550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque to the rear wheels. Therefore, it has 31 less HP and a 50 Nm (32 lb-ft) torque deficit on the Mercedes.

And yet, it will do 100 km/h (62 mph) from a standstill in 4.1 seconds thanks to its 7-speed DCT gearbox. That’s just 0.1 seconds slower. The big difference comes when talking about top speeds, as the Bimmer is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph).

An important factor at play here is the weight as well. The Mercedes has a slight advantage here with its 1,540 kg (3,395 lbs) kerb weight while the M4 tips the scale at the 1,612 (3,553 lbs). However, the BMW is a four-seater and the rear bench can actually be used unlike some other claimed 2+2 models.

So, how to they stack up? In short, the M4 is 0.1 seconds slower despite being 70 kg (154 lbs) heavier, having 31 HP less and two more seats. What’s more, if the pricing rumors come true, the BMW will also be nearly half the price compared to the AMG GT.

Sure, some will say that they simply appeal to different demographics and they would be right. Most times we do make choices (especially when it comes to buying cars) with our heart instead of our brain but what does reason tell you? We can’t wait to see the specs of the C63 AMG!
