Honda Talks about the S2000 Successor It Needs to Build

Here are three words that can easily cause a stir on forums across the web: Honda S2000 Replacement. The idea has been floating around ever since 2009, when the pure driving machine went out of production, but none of the performance driving thoughts that landed meanwhile has materialized.
The latest... spark on the matter comes from Jean-Marc Streng, Honda Europe's Head of Sales, who recently told Autocar that the he would be "very happy to have an S2000 replacement,” but mentioned the business case behind such a project still hasn't reached that point where it appears solid enough to lead to a showroom result.

There is no market, thinking on profitability… it’s difficult to be successful in sports cars," the executive added.

The idea of sporscars not making money has been around as long as the genre itself, but if we look inside the segment, an S2000 revival would make plenty of sense.

Let's take the most recent Honda S2K YouTube presence, for instance - we showed you a sportscar video earlier this week, one coming from Engineering Explained. Jason, the guy behind the channel, decided to throw the Honda roadster in the middle of a rear-wheel-drive comparison involving the 2017 Subaru BRZ and the Mazda Miata - Fiat 124 Spider pair that has taken over many sporscar comparos this year (you can see some screenshots to your right).

At first, it might seem like Jason simply brought the S2000 to the game since he owns that car, but, if we pay attention to the details of the video, it quickly becomes obvious that the Honda can still shine outside the nostalgia bubble.

We're certain Honda is keeping an eye on such stories and while only a helpless dreamer could imagine such a tale would have the power to turn the tables, we can at least hope these positive moments can influence the way in which the automaker builds its future models. After all, the DNA of a carmaker is considerably more important than its flagships.
