Japanese manufacturer Honda has it will be joining the Daytona Prototype class of the 2014 Tudor United SportsCar Championship. The new Honda-Riley vehicle will be fielded by Starworks Motorsport and will make its track debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring later this month.
The Honda-Riley DP chassis will be motivated by a brand new, 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engine built by Honda Performance Development (HPD), the manufacturer’s North American racing company.

HPD says the Daytona Prototype power unit is a version of the production J35 engine, which is currently being used in a range of Honda and Acura cars and pickup trucks, and features production-based block and heads, crankshaft, direct injection fuel system, valve train components and even a stock Honda oil filter.

"This is a great opportunity for HPD and our customer teams in the Tudor United SportsCar Championship," said Steve Eriksen, HPD vice president and COO. "Adding a Daytona Prototype effort alongside the proven HPD-Honda chassis and engine combination in LMP2 provides Honda with a strong and balanced attack in the inaugural Tudor Championship."

Honda will compete against automakers such as Chevrolet, Ford, Mazda and Nissan in the prototype class in this year’s 12 Hours of Sebring race, which is scheduled to kick off Saturday, March 15, at 10:15 AM local time.
