While most of us celebrated the 4th of July by eating barbecue with our family, watching the fireworks show in Washington DC and celebrating everything that's great about the United States of America, one certain individual deemed appropriate to steal a Tesla Model S.
According to NBC Los Angeles, this Friday saw multiple police interceptors chase the stolen Model S at speeds well over 100 mph on the streets of downtown L.A. The authorities were tipped after a Tesla store employee called 911 and reported the theft, but the chase was short-lived after the driver of the luxury electric sedan lost control and crashed into a Honda carrying 5 people.
The accident propelled the Tesla Model S into a light pole that sliced the car in half, with the front of the EV catching fire on the street and the rear half wedged into a synagogue's entrance. The police informs that 2 passengers in the Honda sustained heavy injuries and one is in critical condition, while the thief driver is in a pretty worse state himself. Furthermore, two police officers have been injured as well when their patrol vehicle struck a median.
Aside from the sea of debris scattered throughout North La Brea Avenue temporarily closed for investigation in the vicinity of the 1200 block, NBC Los Angeles reports that at least four other cars have sustained collateral damage from the reckless thief driving the stolen Tesla Model S. Investigators tell that the fire that enveloped the front end of the electric vehicle came with explosion sounds hypothetically caused by bursting battery cells.
The manufacturer is adamant that the Tesla Model S is five times less prone to fire risk than conventional gasoline-powered vehicles thanks to protective plates specially designed to minimize perforation of the battery pack. "Everybody who was looking was screaming," declared witness Francisco Estrada. "Debris was on fire, sparks were coming from debris," said another witness. "They tried to help but there was too much smoke."
