A few weeks ago, an email from one our spy photography collaborators made almost all of us giggle like little schoolgirls. Attached to the email was an array of spy shot that depicted an extreme-looking version of the upcoming 2018 Mercedes-AMG E63 Wagon.
Extremely wide wheel-arches have always hinted at a hardcore, Black Series version, at Mercedes-AMG, which is probably why everyone that has taken a glance at this pre-production model has said the same thing: this is the new Mercedes-AMG E63 T-Modell Black Series.
Everyone but us, that is, because there are two small problems with that line of thought. First of all, there has never been an AMG Black Series model that featured any other shape than a coupe. The very first one, the SLK 55 Black Series, was converted from a coupe-roadster to a fixed-roof coupe. The same thing happened to the monstrous SL 65 Black Series, whose roof was fixed as well.
So why would Mercedes-AMG take that strategy, throw it out the window, and then come up with a Black Series station wagon? It wouldn't make any sense.
Second of all, if you look closely in both the video we have embedded and the adjacent photo gallery, you will probably notice that these weird AMG prototypes have a whole lot of ground clearance for something that should be a hardcore family sports car. Do you know what other upcoming Mercedes-Benz stations wagon will have a higher ground clearance? The recently confirmed E-Class All Terrain (name not official yet), that's who!
Therefore, we want to speculate that this angry-looking wagon is simply the AMG version of the first E-Class wagon crossover. Not even Audi has made an RS version of its Allroad models yet, but Ingolstadt's head honchos may want to change their plans after this new Mercedes-AMG model hits the market.
Apart from an AMG-tuned 4Matic system, which is about to get a new name soon anyway, the E63 Wagon and its “All Terrain” brother will also get a more powerful version of the twin-turbocharged, 4.0-liter V8 that will deliver two levels of power.
The regular E63 will have 571 PS (563 hp) and 750 Nm (553.2 lb-ft) of torque, while the top-of-the-range E63 S will up the ante to 612 PS (604 hp) and 850 Nm (627 lb-ft) of tire-shredding torque.
