SRT has done a great job at ensuring the new Viper is awesome right out of the box. It's got launch control, every lightweight material possible and can smoke some supercars at the drag strip. In fact, Chrysler engineers have recently been spotted testing the car at a drag strip in Florida, probably preparing for a bespoke rocket to blitz the quarter mile.
Not wanting to be left behind, American tuners and all-round butt kickers Hennessey have begun work on the 1,000 horsepower monster they promised. The first step was to test the Viper and see what they are working with.
Official figures say the 8.4-liter V10 engine has 640-hp and and 600 lb-ft (813 Nm) of torque. Those conveniently rounded figures mean absolutely nothing for drag racers, who like to measure horsepower at the wheel, not at the crank.
Hennessey found the 2013 SRT Viper dynos at 558 rear wheel HP and 515 lb-ft of torque. Now all that's left to be done is to add forced induction and double those figures. Simple, right?
