Golf R400 Production Confirmed, GTI Club Sport Coming to Worthersee 2015

Volkswagen caused quite the stir in 2014 when the Golf R400 Concept presented itself on stage at the Beijing Motor Show. We honestly didn't think it was possible to put it into production, due to reliability issues, but VW will spare no efforts to be the best.

VW Group powertrain chief Heinz-Jakob Neusser has confirmed to CAR magazine that a production version of the R400 is on its way. There won't be any hybrid tech, just a 2-liter turbocharged TSI engine dumping out at least 200 horsepower for each cubic decimeter of its displacement.

Apparently, even 400 horsepower could be too little, as the car might get the 420 PS unit used by the Audi TT420 Concept. With that much oomph, the Golf is likely to become the fastest hatchback in the world, outclassing the 367 PS Audi RS3 and the expected 380 PS version of the A45 AMG.

Even though it's backed by a company official, the idea of such a powerful car is hard to fathom. Audi's quattro engineers have said the bigger 2.5-liter TFSI reached its maximum potential at 367 PS because reliability needs to be taken into consideration.

A couple of quick arithmetic calculations show Audi is stopping at 147 PS per liter while Volkswagen is likely to push on to 210 PS.

All things considered, the R400 is a fantastic looking car that deserves to go into production. Surely, there are lots of fans across Europe, who want to see the full potential of the Golf unlocked and are willing to pay around €50,000 for the ownership privilege.

The Golf GTI Club Sport

Speaking of die-hard Golf fans, the same article has revealed the ultimate Golf GTI will be revealed at the annual GTI Treffen on the shores of Lake Worthersee, Austria.

We are talking about the GTI Club Sport, which has been seen testing at the Nurburgring on a number of occasions. You can watch it in action below and tell us what you think, but we're convinced there's a mechanical limited slip differential and a more powerful 2.0 TSI engine under the hood.

Both could be taken directly from the SEAT Leon Cupra, together with those nice go-fast bits from the Under8 package (better rubber, springs and lighter alloys).

That won't be the only hot GTI being shown at the 2015 Worthersee event, as a full-scale version of the next Vision Gran Turismo car is being prepared. It's called the GTI Supersport and has a turbocharged VR6 with 503 PS and 665 Nm (491 lb-ft) of torque. 0 to 100 km/h takes just 3.6 seconds, and the top speed is 300 km/h (186 mph).
