As far as 20th century movie franchises go, it is impossible to ignore the impact of a British spy going by the name of James Bond. Double O Seven was created by novelist Ian Fleming in 1953 and his spy adventures were adapted into more than 20 films. But Goldfinger, the third in the list, holds a special place in the hearts and minds of 007 enthusiasts.
The third James Bond film ever made and the third to star Sean Connery was released in 1964. In the former movie, From Russia With Love, the British special agent used a 4.5-liter Bentley, but thankfully, Goldfinger introduced Bond's one true love: the Aston Martin. Specifically, the legendary DB5, which was kitted with the infamous ejector seat, tire-slashing hubcap blades, front-wing machine guns and a retractable rear bulletproof shield.
Though Bond occasionally traded his British grand tourers for various BMWs, Citroens and Lotuses, he always returned to tricked out cars wearing the Aston Martin badge. And as Goldfinger celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, Bond film creators EON Productions decided to commission a unique Aston Martin DB5 model car. The DB5 replica is plated with 24-carat gold and comes with goodies such as radio controlled machine guns, revolving number plates and the trick retractable rear bulletproof shield.
Signed by legendary Bond production designer Sir Ken Adam, the scale model Aston Martin DB5 will be offered at auction by Christie's. Specialists expect the gold model to sell for at least £40,000 ($66,000), but who knows how high the bidding will go until the hammer will drop on September 17th.
Also included in the sale will be a unique 18k yellow gold Seamaster Aqua Terra wristwatch created by Omega to celebrate the anniversary of the film. Other lots included in the sale are a first edition Goldfinger book and a vintage Goldfinger British cinema poster designed by Robert Brownjohn.
