German Company Readying Start-Stop System for Highway Use

While we may associate stop-start systems with improving the efficiency of city driving, by turning off the engine completely at traffic lights, or when coasting at low speed, a German automotive supplies company, Hella, is developing a similar system, but for use on the highway.

They are working on a system which can shut off the engine completely, at speeds of up to 100 km/h (62 mph), for fuel savings of up to 10% over a conventional system. However, despite the fact that the engine is not running, brakes, steering and everything else will remain functional - this will be achieved with electrical power alone, and cars fitted with the systems will get an additional battery, just in case the main one gets exhausted.

We are curious to see if this actually works in practice, but we will have to wait between 3 to 5 years to see it trickle down into a production car.
