Georgia Power Launches EV Rate Plan

Falling behind in this insane race that has become the adoption of electric vehicles, utility companies are now hurrying to come up with the best solutions that would allow their customers to charge their vehicles without feeling their pockets emptying by the second.

With most of the electricity suppliers still in the dark about how to proceed, Georgia Power, who serves 2.3 million customers in Georgia state announced on Tuesday the launch of a rate plan that would satisfy all.

After some careful calculation, the company reached the conclusion that a typical user in the state needs 12,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) annually. Once he gets an EV, that same customer would add to the bill 4,000 kWh annually, provided he doesn't travel more than 12,000 miles in his electric car.

For them, the company will implement a rate plan that would save EV owners some 13 percent over the people who do not own an EV, provided they decided to charge their vehicles between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m. That is exactly the time frame US authorities are targeting as a means to reduce the expected surge of demand from the power grid during the day.

"Georgia Power is committed to being an industry leader and expert resource for customers as they purchase their first electric vehicles," said Chris Bell, Georgia Power's vice president of energy planning and sales.

"With more than 20 years of experience researching, developing and marketing electric vehicles, our goal is to educate customers about this developing new industry and help get them up to speed on everything they need to incorporate an electric vehicle into their household."
