Gary Weckesser's "Mach IV" Four-Engine Mustang

It’s not every day that you hear about a Ford Mustang powered by four smallblock V8s in a four wheel drive configuration. So we couldn’t help ourselves from bringing it to your attention.

The Ford Mustang was probably the greatest muscle car in history. Its 351 (5.7-liter) V8 claimed an impressive 250 hp as standard. So it’s only natural that Gary Weckesser, a legendary US dragracer, asked himself what would happen if he put four of them in his 1969 Pony.

The project took Gary a year to finish and was done without any support from Ford. The chassis is formed of 4130 chrome-moly tubing and covered with a radically altered '69 Mustang Funny Car fiberglass shell. The engines are faced back to back, and the forward engines feature reverse-grind cams. All the four mills feature Hunt magnetos and Kent Enderle injectors.

The creator of this "monstrosity" decided he wanted to keep weight as low as possible (which is a crucial factor when it comes to drag-racing). The interior is spartan to say the least, while the 32 open exhausts (one for each piston) are a big crowd pleaser at auto shows and racing events. The car shot down the quarter mile in just 7 seconds back in 1973, arriving at the finish line at 200 mph (320 km/h).

Weckesser had a very limited budget to run races, so when the 70s’ oil crisis broke out, he stopped racing in order to take better care of his wife and four children. This project clearly was a labor of love, but with a total displacement of 22.8-liters, we're wondering what kind of mpg figures you get.

Mihnea's favorite cars have already been built, the so-called modern classics from the '80s and '90s. He also loves local car culture from all over the world, so don't be surprised to see him getting excited about weird Japanese imports, low-rider VWs out of Germany, replicas from Russia or LS swaps down in Florida.
