Ford Presents Focus Electric... Charging Cord

The world is already aware of the electric version of the new Focus, which will be launched by American manufacturer Ford in late 2011. What no one was wondering with so much time left until the launch is what Ford will use to recharge the vehicle.

Even so, the carmaker decided to give us a preview of the... charging cord which will come with the Focus. Called by Ford “convenience cord,” the cable can be plugged in any 120V outlet (despite the fact that carmakers admit that most EV users will go for the more powerful, 240V Level 2 charging stations, they insist on offering 120 charging cord as standard).

What's so special about Ford's cord? Nothing, really. It's just a cord. But Ford did announce some interesting numbers which it said it lead to the creation of this cable. The carmaker calculated that a cord must cope with at least 4 charging sessions a day (or 1,500 a year). For comparison, ICE-powered cars are filled up once a week, or 52 times a year.

“Focus Electric owners can look forward to having a ‘refueling’ device they can call their own,”
promises Sherif Marakby, Ford director, Electrification Program and Engineering. “Since Focus Electric owners are likely to handle one of the charge cords two or more times everyday, we’re providing a distinctive and durable device for their plugging-in experience.”

The cord will be offered by Ford for free, as a standard feature on the electric Focus. If, by chance, you don't want to wait for an eternity until the battery is ready to go again, a 240V charging station and cord will be probably offered as well, but as an option.

To give you an idea of what that means, take a look at GM. It offers a 120V charging cord as standard as well. But the optional SPX Service Solutions charging station, complete with the required cord, costs $490 (the unit), plus an extra $1,475 installation.
