Introduced in South America a whopping two years ago, the Ka-replacing Ford Ka+ is now available in Europe. In the United Kingdom, pricing for the five-door hatchback city car starts from £8,995. In Germany, pricing kicks off at €9,990.
To make way for the Ka+ and to prepare for the next-generation Fiesta, which will be plusher than the one we have today, Ford has increased the price of the Fiesta by phasing out base trims. But what the Fiesta has lost in pricing, the Ka+ has gained regarding standard equipment.
“Ford has a long history of offering affordable small cars that are practical, economical and fun-to-drive,” declared Jim Farley, the executive vice president and president of Ford Europe and the Ford Middle East and Africa divisions. “Ka+ is true to that tradition, packing a huge amount into a compact car that delivers agile driving dynamics and a comfortable interior with class-leading front headroom and rear legroom.”
Compared to the old Ka, the one based on the same underpinnings as the Fiat 500, the Ka+ is a more spacious vehicle. And although it’s shorter than the Fiesta, the Ka+ happens to be 29 millimeters taller. In terms of trunk capacity, 270 liters (9.5 cubic feet) are good enough for two large suitcases. For more space, the standard 60/40 split-folding rear seats can make way for additional bits and bobs.
Only one engine is available for the 2016 Ford Ka+ in the form of a 1.2-liter Duratec four-cylinder unit. The naturally aspirated mill churns out 69 horsepower (70 PS) and 142 lb-ft (105 Nm) of torque in base form. There’s a more compelling alternative, though, packing 84 horsepower (85 PS) and 152 lb-ft (112 Nm) of torque. Whichever tune you go for, only a five-speed manual transmission is available.
Later this year, the Ford Ka+ lineup will add two special editions. Pictured in the main photograph of this story, the Ka+ Zetec Black and Ka+ Zetec White feature black-painted 15-inch alloy wheels and either a black body with white roof and door mirrors or a white body with black roof and door mirrors.
