For the first time in ages, you are spoiled for choice if you want to buy a C-segment hot hatch in Europe. There's the tried and tested Golf GTI which is getting replaced soon with a slightly better model, the mental 280 hp Opel Astra OPC, the track tool that is the Renault Megane Sport and the Ford Focus ST.
All have different strengths and weaknesses compared to their rivals and it seems Ford found the best blend. According to them, a study by Polk found the new Focus ST was the best sold hot hatch in Europe during the last three months of 2012.

Considering awareness wasn't that high for this brand new car, the results are surprising. 44% of buyers chose it, compared to only 33% for the Golf GTI, a long time leader, and just 12% for the Megane RS.

Total Focus ST sales in this period were 1,984, making it top-selling hot hatch in the UK as well as Denmark, Norway, Finland, Hungary, Switzerland, Sweden and the Netherlands.
“The unrivalled balance of performance and usability has been recognised by some fantastic reviews for the Focus ST,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “You really have to drive it yourself to experience the responsiveness of the engine and the fantastic chassis.  I am one of a fast-growing group of excited ST drivers.”
