The NHTSA has commenced a probe into the Fusion and Edge models made by Ford, which had already triggered two earlier recalls.
The first problem concerns the doors of the 2011-2013 Ford Edge SUVs, which had received about 1,560 reports that owners saw the “door ajar” warning light on the instrument cluster even when the doors were properly locked.
We looked through the NHTSA website and found similar complaints about the 2016 Ford Edge, with the latest being filed at the end of September 2016.
Ford had operated three recall actions since April 2015 to fix door latches on the Edge model, which included 2.4 million vehicles. Blue Oval representatives say that the locks in older Edge models had a different design, and the probe that the NHTSA has started is focused on the “door ajar” light, and not the doors themselves.
At the same time, the 2010 Ford Fusion is being scrutinized over its power steering system. Apparently, there were 547 reports of power steering failure in this model, and the resulting recall could involve up to 262,599 cars.
In the case of a failure of this type, the steering wheel is difficult to turn, and the risk of a collision is raised. As USA Today notes, there were 12 accidents reported that were related to the problem, and four injuries were caused.
Drivers complained that the problem can occur at low speeds, and that there is a warning light on the dash for it that warns the user of the fault.
The 2011 and 2012 Ford Fusion was already recalled because of the same power steering unit, but the probe has been extended to the 2010 model because of a high number of driver complaints.
Meanwhile, on the NHTSA website, we spotted a complaint filed this September for a 2015 Ford Fusion. You can view it in the photo gallery of this article. The user complains about a steering issue, but also other faults, which might not be linked to the two recalls.
Also in the image gallery, you can view owner complaints filed with the NHTSA on the same issues regarding the older model years specified above.
