Ford Celebrates 50 Years of Mustang Racing

Introduced in April 17, 1964, it didn’t take too long for the revolutionary Ford Mustang to make its race track debut. It happened only one month later, when a brand new Mustang acted as a pace car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500. The same year, the pony car won the Tour de France and made its drag racing debut in the United States.

More success followed in 1965, when the Shelby GT350R won five of the SCCA’s six divisions and the manufacturers’ championship in the Trans-Am series in 1966, 1967 and again in 1970. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg, as the Mustang went on to win many other events the past 50 years. Way to many to be mentioned here and now.

However, you can have a look at the Mustang’s glorious racing past (and present) with Ford Racing, who just released the “50 Years of Winning on the Track” video, a three minute-long slideshow showcasing the musclecar’s career at the race track. Will the 2015 Mustang make its forerunners proud? The new independent rear suspension should help a lot.
