Ford Boldly Goes Where No OEM Has Gone Before: the RV Market

How much of a Ford fan are you? Enough to buy anything wearing the Blue Oval? That seems to be what the Michigan-based manufacturer is trying to find out with its new line of recreational vehicles.

That's right. Ford has teamed up with Livin Lite, a company owned by RV experts Thor Industries, to come up with licensed toy haulers, travel trailers, and slide-in campers. They're meant to be used with Ford trucks, but that's not to say that if you drive to the dealer in a Ram, they won't sell you a Ford RV.

Ford says the decision to license its name to the recreational vehicles industry came naturally, because "recreational vehicles are part of Ford’s history, so these new camping options are great for our adventurous customers. [...] We are confident customers will be impressed with the unique, bold designs and comfortable features offered in the Ford RV line."

Built from aluminum alloy, all the new products were designed jointly by Living Lite and Ford Truck Design. The two design teams spent well over a year to create the RVs, incorporating Ford styling cues such as the F-Series-inspired front window and F-Series-style wheels. The huge Blue Ovals on the sides will also tell you that this is a Ford product. Inside you will find elements reminiscent of the F-Series Lariat, including unique leathers and stitched Ford Blue Ovals in seat cushions.

The range includes slide-in truck campers for 6- and 8-foot truck beds, while the travel trailers and toy haulers will initially be offered in 22- and 24-foot lengths. We say "initially" because Ford plans to launch several other recreational vehicles.

Ford won't be using its own dealers to sell the RVs. Instead, you can get one through Livin Lite's dealers starting early 2016 for the campers, and the second quarter of next year for the trailers and haulers. You can check out all the specs for every model currently available in the camper range at the newly-launched dedicated website.
